Roadtrip Across America

This summer, my family and I took a two-week road trip across the country. We stopped in 23 total states, and saw national parks like Zion, Grand Canyon, and Badlands, big cities like Chicago IL, and small towns like Sedona AZ. We went rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiked an immeasurable amount of miles.

The Dominican Republic

November of my Sophomore year (2019), I traveled with a group through Watkinson on a service trip with other high school students, doctors, and teachers to La Romana. We set up a traveling med clinic at different locations every day and built hurricane-proof houses in the bateys (sugarcane work camps). I was also lucky enough to be one of the few students who worked alongside teachers at the Joe Hartman School for a day. Today, I contemplate the implications that service trips carry. I have spent the last few months discussing white savior complexes with my peers and debating the connotations surrounding my trip to the Dominican Republic. While I don't have an answer as to whether the trip was rooted in American exceptionalism and Eurocentrism, I know that I was able to generate deep connections with others and learn more about myself and the world around me.
